NOTE: The procedures outlined in this post are available only to organizations that are already using a private merchant account to process credit card transactions with OvationTix linked up to one of the approved integrated gateways: Authorize.net, PayPal PayflowPro, CardConnect, or SagePay.
The short answer is you can't. And that's a rule of the financial industry, not OvationTix. The most straightforward thing for you to do is to refund to a patron credit, and if you need to pay something out to the patron, pay out the credit to your check payment method.
If it is absolutely imperative that money be returned directly to the credit card, then you should be able to initiate a new transaction directly via your gateway to credit the amount you want to refund to the card.* You will need to get the card information again, since this is not a transaction referencing a previous transaction like a normal refund would do. OvationTix, being a third party to this, is not permitted by the gateway to initiate this type of transaction.
If you are able to do the above directly through the gateway, then you'll be able to account for this in OvationTix by
- Creating a Custom Payment Type (found under your Tools menu) for this purpose. (You can call it something like 'Gateway Transaction' or 'Auth.net Direct'. Just something that will indicate to you and your numbers people that it was actually handled outside of OvationTix.)
- Refund to a patron credit as described in the first paragraph, but paying the credit out to that new payment method you created instead.
